Unsung Greats of Women's Boxing

Women's boxing has been around for more than 200 years, yet it has never received the same level of attention as men's boxing. In this section, you'll discover some of the groundbreaking female boxers who inspire us.

Illustrated profile of boxer Barbara Buttrick with stats and career details.

Buttrick in 5 facts

After the end of WWII, 18-year-old Buttrick moved from Yorkshire to London, driven by her passion for boxing.

She relocated to train at Mickey Wood's Mayfair Gym, eager to make her mark in the boxing community.

Technically brilliant, Buttrick showcased her skills across the UK in carnival booths. However, when she attempted to gain recognition in exhibition matches in London, she faced criticism from certain segments of the British press and outraged members of 'polite society'.

Seeking new opportunities, she moved to the US, where she enjoyed a successful professional career and participated in the first women's boxing match ever televised.

Now in her 90s, Buttrick lives in Florida and remains deeply involved in the world of women's boxing.
